Actor

Gordon Deitrich is a man with public celebrity status, manouevering to survive in a dangerous and unhealthy milieu, an honorable character who nevertheless does not fit in and is a serious risk to the powers that be. He uses the mask of his public persona as his primary means of defense. However, the point comes when he has to make a choice to openly stand up for what he believes in, to disclose the injustice he sees around him, at the cost of risking everything that he has, including his life. Such a point comes for artists, journalists, writers everywhere who wish to stand up for truth and liberty but who are confined in an environment where to do so is practically an act of suicide.

In addition to his political insight and scholarly curiosity, he also does not conform to the socially required norm in his sexuality, and if this were ever to be discovered he would face serious consequences. His character is used as a reminder of the potential slippery slope to intolerance, to ‘Aryan’ or ‘Inquisitional’ mindset, that ultimately ends in persecution and genocide of the innocent.

V For Vendetta Quotes

Evey Hammond: Are you a Muslim?
Gordon Deitrich: No. I’m in television.

Gordon finally takes a stand and openly speaks out against the regime:

Gordon Deitrich: [about his TV show] We threw out the censor-approved script and shot a new one that I wrote this morning.
Evey Hammond: [dumbfounded] Oh, my God…

Gordon on the effects of psychological survival mechanisms within a fascist state:

Gordon Deitrich: You wear a mask for so long, you forget who you were beneath it.

Gordon looks after Evey:

Evey Hammond: What is that you’re making?
Gordon Deitrich: We call it “eggie in the basket”. My mum used to make them.
Evey: This is weird.
Gordon: What?
Evey: The first morning I was with him, he made me eggs just like this.
Gordon: Really?
Evey: I swear.
Gordon: That is a strange coincidence. Although, there’s an obvious explanation.
Evey: There is?
Gordon: Yes, Evey. I am V. At last you know the truth. You’re stunned, I know. It’s hard to believe isn’t it, that beneath this wrinkled, well-fed exterior there lies a dangerous killing machine with a fetish for Fawkesian masks. ┬íViva la revoluci├│n!
Evey: That is not funny, Gordon.
Gordon: [sighs] Yeah, I know. I’m useless without a studio audience.
