Malcolm Reynolds is the dauntless captain of the good ship ‘Serenity’. In his past he fought for the independence, (the ‘browncoats’), who eventually lost the war against the current seat of power, the ‘Alliance’. This regime rules the inner planets with an iron fist, driving Malcolm into a life of petty crime simply in order to survive (though anything which opposes the Alliance has an extra appeal to him). He ekes out a living by keeping a low profile, attempting to fly under the Alliance’s radar, but this becomes harder every year as their authoritarian empire expands across populated space.

Serenity: Mal Quotes

Mal explains his predicament to Simon:

Mal: I look out for me and mine. That don’t include you ‘less I conjure it does. Now you stuck a thorn in the Alliance’s paw — that tickles me a bit. But it also means I gotta step twice as fast to avoid ‘em, and that means turnin’ down plenty of jobs. Even honest ones. Put this crew together with the promise of work, which the Alliance makes harder every year. Come a day there won’t be room for naughty men like us to slip about at all. This job goes south, there well not be another. So here’s us, on the raggedy edge.

Mal reassures Simon about River’s involvement in a dangerous mission:

Mal: Doctor, I’m taking your sister under my protection here. If anything happens to her, anything at all, I swear to you, I will get very choked up. Honestly, there could be tears.

Mal’s ‘Bank Heist’ announcement:

Mal: Y’all want to be lookin’ very intently at your own bellybuttons. See a head start to rise, violence is going to ensue. Probably guessed we mean to be thievin’ here but what we’re after’s not yours, so…let not have no undue fuss.

Mal: [to unseen guard in vault below] Listen up! We’re comin’ down to empty that vault.

Guard: You have to give me your authorization password.

[Jayne points gun down the the stairwell and fires several rounds]

Guard: Okay!

Mal negotiates with captured guard, on where to shoot him:

Mal: The leg is good. It’ll bleed plenty and we avoid any necessary organs.

Guard: I was thinking more of a graze?

Mal: Well you don’t want to look like you just gave up.

Mal: You had a gorram time bomb living with us! Who we gonna find in there when she wakes up? The girl? Or the weapon?

Simon: I thought she was getting better.

Jayne: And I thought they was getting off. Didn’t we have an intricate plan on how they was gonna be not here any more?

Kaylee: We couldn’t leave them now.

Jayne: No, now that she’s a killer woman, we ought to be bringing her tea and dumplings.

Mal has just been talking to Inara on the communicator:

Wash: Inara… nice to see her again.

Zoe: [pause] So…trap?

Mal: Trap.

Zoe: We goin’ in?

Mal: Ain’t but a few hours out.

Wash: [confused] Yeah, but…remember the part where it’s a trap?

Mal: If that’s the case then Inara’s already caught in it. She wouldn’t set us up willin’. Might be we get a shot at seein’ who’s turnin’ these wheels. We go in.

Kaylee: But how can you be sure Inara don’t just wanna see you? Sometimes people have feelings. I’m referring here to people.

Mal: Y’all were watchin’, I take it?

[everyone looks guilty]

Kaylee: Yes.

Mal: Did you see us fight?

Kaylee: No.

Mal: Trap.

Mal: Half of writing history is hiding the truth.

Zoe: It’s a fair bet the Alliance knows about Mr. Universe. They’re gonna see this comin’.

Mal: No. They’re not gonna see this comin’.

Mal decides on the best course of action after their discovery on Miranda:

Mal: This record here’s about twelve years old. Parliament buried it and it stayed buried until River here dug it up. This is what they were afraid she knew. And they were right to fear. There’s a universe of folk who’re gonna know it, too. Someone has to speak for these people.

[pause]

Y’all got on this boat for different reasons, but y’all come to the same place. So now I’m asking more of you than I have before. Maybe all. Sure as I know anything, I know this – they will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, ten? They’ll swing back to the belief that they can make people… better. And I do not hold to that. So no more runnin’. I aim to misbehave.
