Shepherd Book is a rather unusual clergyman. He seems to know an awful lot about firearms, and the workings of the Alliance. In the TV series Firefly we also find out that the Alliance take him very seriously, and he seems to hold some position of influence or reputation. However, we don’t have much time to find out about his shadowy past. His heart seems to be in the right place, he provides refuge for Malcolm Reynolds and his crew, and even takes down an Alliance ship when they come for him.
Serenity: Book Quotes
Book is tight-lipped about his past:
Mal: It’s of interest to me, how much you seem to know about that world.
Book: Wasn’t born a Shepherd, Mal.
Mal: You’ll have to tell me about that sometime.
Book: No. I don’t.
Mal: Shouldn’t've been you. Alliance shoulda hit us. Shoulda hit me.
Book: That crossed my mind.
Shepherd Book on his deathbed, relates to Mal what happened, and maintains his sense of humour:
Book: I killed the ship that…killed us. It’s not very Christian of me.
Mal: You did what’s right.
Book: Coming from you that means…almost nothing.
